CRYPTID!

Imagine you’re walking in the woods when you suddenly spot something amidst the leaves.

At first it looks like the remains of some bird, but a closer inspection reveals the impossible: the bones of a creature which should only exist in legends…

A fairy.

Or at least, a fairy’s skeleton.

Cryptids are mythical creatures, such as the Sasquatch, mermaids and, yes, fairies.

This particular discovery is, actually, artwork by a talented artist from Lisbon named Hauke Vagt.

Hauke’s artwork spans from the silly and whimsical, to the dreamy and surreal, all the way to the outright creepy. I have had the fortune of working with him on two occasions. One was for the cover of my recent sci-fi mystery “To Cipher and to Sing”, for which he took my ugly rendering and transformed it into the amazing illustrated result. The other time was when we underwent a curious phase of reciprocal inspiration where his drawings inspired me to write a short story, which then inspired him to illustrate it.

You can now enjoy the result, “Asylum”, even as a short video with my narration and his outstanding artwork.

Asylum – by Ian Lahey and Hauke Vagt

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I received this incredibly detailed miniature work of art. I have a special shelf in my library, dedicated to all things weird, uncanny and paranormal, and this little gem will have a special place.
